New Orleans Journal
March 29th, 2004 06:53 pmWell, I'm back from Spring Break. ::sigh:: I must go back to Real Life now.
Day 1
Thursday, March 25, 2004
My mother, brother, sister-in-law, and I arrived at the hotel after a 4-hour or so drive. We stayed at the St. James, which was nice -- fairly close to main attractions and decent service... but why there are no windows, I have no clue!
After getting settled, we went to the Aquarium. Last time I was there was about 7 or 8 years ago. It's much better now that I appreciate animals more... and have a silly obsession with saying peces, which is Spanish for fish. :D (Spanish has totally messed me up. I've stopped using some English words altogether.) Man, they have some BIG fish -- some even bigger than the sharks!
We ate at a nice pizza place (Dante's Pizza) for dinner before venturing into my worst nightmare... Bourbon Street. Never before have I been in a place that so completely went against every moral and value I have. And being OCD didn't help at all. (What's OCD, you say? Think Adrian Monk on a thankfully much, much, MUCH less severe level... but I'm still pretty bad.) Everything is too loud, moves too much, and people don't know how to use a crosswalk. After a few minutes, I had to throw many of my southern hospitality rules out the window (i.e., looking people in the eye and smiling). And some of the things they had for sale in the shops -- there is NO reason the F-word should be on a T-shirt one, much less THREE times!! OMG, I had to stop looking at things altogether, which is really hard since I can't help but look at and read everything I see. I say again... NIGHTMARE!
Of course, I'm the poster child for "white girl" and all that goes completely against my personality. Some of you might like it, but it's certainly not for me.
Day 2
Friday, March 26, 2004
We road the trolley through the lovely Garden District. We spent most of the day at the Zoo. It was fun, and we even got to touch some critters in the Creature Encounter. But a toad tried to escape! He was wrapped in a plastic bag and hopped out of the cooler they had him in. It was quite funny to see a bag hopping across the stage!
For lunch we ate at a GREAT chicken place, Mother Clucker's. I'm not too thrilled about the name, but the food was great! Maybe even the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. :D
My peeps dragged me down Bourbon Street again. It's not at freaky in the day, but it's still too crazy for my liking. We ate beignets at a café. They tasted just like the funnel cakes I get at the State Fair. Yummy!
CELEBRITY SIGHTING!!!! Apparently, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith walked passed me as we were leaving the café! My sister-in-law was all excited and nearly ripped my brother's arm off when she grabbed him to make him turn to look. And poor little me, all I could say was, "Who's Steven Tyler?" Of course, I've heard of Aerosmith, but not anyone specific associated with it. So, that's my first and probably only brush with fame... that Steven Tyler apparently walked passed me. :D
Later on, we went to Riverwalk mall and had DELICIOUS lemon gelato!!
Day 3
Saturday, March 27, 2004
We spent nearly all day at the D-Day Museum. It's was really cool and very well done. But there is so much there, not even all day is enough to see it all. We were there for nearly 5 hours, for crying out loud!
After looking for a place for, like, ever we ate dinner where Mom could try some local dishes. And being the person with the most boring culinary choices in the world, I had pasta.
Bro and Sis-in law went to the Casino, but I stayed in the hotel room. Just so you know, I may be underage, but I CAN so get away with being over 21 if I really wanted to, but this darn thing called Honesty gets in my way. But I can't gamble anyway... I'mcheap thrifty. ;)
Day 4
Sunday, March 28, 2004
Bro drove home. Ate some lunch. Sis-in-law drove some. I slept the whole time. Got home. Hung with my Dad a bit before driving back to school.
Why do vacations always have to end with a lot of driving?
Anyway, I'm back now, safe and sound.
And about as wild and crazy as I got was using the Men's Room once when the Ladies' Room was out of order.
I'm happy with my little white bread life, so I'll stay with it, thank you very much. :D
