SG-1 Rant

I think.... I'm getting fed up with SG-1. I *love* the show desperately, or I wouldn't have spent the last 7 or so years of my life sharing the lives of the characters. But I think it's time the show should end. Like, now. The main reason I watch is for Jack, and though I do like when other characters have their moments, the show isn't going to mean as much to me without Jack. All the Jack Lists talk about is how he hasn't really been treated fairly the past few seasons, and while mostly agree, I'm sick of hearing about it. I'm sick of people not being happy enough with what is there. And I'm sick of all the fic writers whumping the poor man into nothingness. I haven't read a fic I really liked in I can't remember. I'm seriously considering getting off all my Jack Lists because of it all.

I respect that RDA wants to be there for Wylie, in fact, I love him even more for it. But if in doing so, Jack has virtually disappeared, it's time for the show to end, in my opinion. But no. The Powers That Be are going to keep it going for however long. And while I'll continue to watch until the very end and have my heart break whenever it finally does end, it's not going to give me as much joy as new episodes used to. My only saving grace is that I have my roommate and LJ people to still squee over old and new things. :)

The one good thing in all this, for me at least? Stargate Atlantis. If SG-1 were to go at the end of this season, I would survive as long as Atlantis stayed around at least half as long. I'm having way more fun right now with it than its predecessor...

I know how you feel hun! I personally agree that Rick's time the last two seasons has for the most part been wasted on ship--TPTB SO could have used him more constructively! But I agree that the ranting constantly about it can get grating after a while.

I'm heartbroken Rick is leaving. He's the only..well the MAIN reason I watched SG-1 and after what TPTB did to the character I'm almost glad that he's not going to be in S9 just cause it means they won't have the chance to ruin him any worse than they've already.

I won't be watching S9 as a result, but like you am enjoying Atlantis immensely!! And am looking forward to S2 and more from them.

I'll always be a Jack Fangirl, but I don't know if I'd call myself an SG1 fangirl anymore. Maybe a SG-1 S1-3 fangirl ;)

Sorry if my rants have started you ranting too:P And sorry if I'm one of those people that are tempting you to leave the Jack-lists. I think it's just hard for some Jack fans to stay positive anymore after what the writers have done to Jack...

But I totally agree on the fic thing :( I don't remember the last time I read an SG fic I liked! *sniffles*

I probably wouldn't have been so bad if I'd been out of fandom all together--but when you hear other Jack fans voicing the things you yourself are feeling too...it's MUCH harder to be happy with what we're being given.

But in the end there is always Season 1 thru 3. And some good episodes interspersed through the rest of the seasons as well :)

You know, it is even worse when you watched it all in half a year and did not really grow that attached to the characters. Good thing there is still Danny porn out there to keep me interested. Or I might be mad at you for making me waste my time with that show.

And four or five Seasons of Atlantis sounds good. It starts here in Germany on Wednesday. I am curious about the German voices. *gg*

Yeah, it might not effect you as much, but either way, watching this show would never be a waste of time. It's been a big part of my life for almost as long as I can remember, and I'm always going to cherish that.

I just had to share that love with someone I love. ;)

I am a very bad ranter so I am really happy when someone else shares my opinion and can express it. All I can say is: I agree.

Atlantis: Yay!
SG-1 past DVDs: YAY!
Prospect of more great Atlantis: YAAAY!!
Prospect of SG-1 season 9: Um. I've stayed out of this fan war on every website I've been to and I'm not about to put my foot in it now. But my lack of 'yay' should be saying enough.

I'm seeing both sides of it. I love Jack O'Neill, but he's not my favorite character in the series. Don't get me wrong, I will miss him to pieces!

A lot of Jack fans argue several things on why he hasn't been treated "fairly." One, he hasn't been around. Starting in S6, we see less and less of Jack. More to the point, with episode "Nightwalkers" we see the very first episode that has no Jack at all beyond a brief mention. For a long time, they didn't even explain Jack's absences. Two, they've reduced his character, in many cases, to almost nothing but the "dumb Colonel/General" or have him there only for the shippiness tension with Carter. Many Jack fans don't like ship, and they like it even less when there's nothing but ship. There may be other points, but those are two that bother me. They've taken away not only the quantity of Jack, but the quality. While there are some exceptions, that's how many of us have felt as early as S6.

Well, you didn't see Jack in early S6 because the Tok'ra hadn't found another host for Kanen (sp?). They mention that in one episode (not sure which as I've only seen S6 once through) and that's probably where he was during "Nightwalkers".

Yes, "Nightwalkers" was the episode between the one where he was implanted and then the one where, well, I don't want to spoil you incase you haven't seen "Abyss". :|

Anyway. I know why he was gone then. But still, it was the very first ep, and not the last, with zero Jack. That is significant to me. However, there are other instances where his absences weren't explained, or whenever he was there, he wasn't exactly in character.

Oy. I could go on and on about this, but I'll spare you now. *g*

I love SG-1 and I'm still new to the game. I think Jack is integral to the show, but it can go on without him. Jack and Daniel were the beginning of the show. They are the root relationship and characters. The writers have done a lot to pull the two of them apart and allow them to develop outside of the friendship so they can each stand alone as characters. I think we'll miss Jack next year, but ultimately I think it'll be the same romp it's always been. And there's always DVDs and good fanfiction.

I'm glad RDA is moving on. It's best for actors/writers/producers to leave when they're ready to. Besides, after a little time, who's to say that RDA wouldn't want to come back for a Season 10?

I don't deny this. Jack is a big reason I watch, but not the only. I'll keep watching because the cinematography and such never fails to make me squee, and if there's no Jack, that'll still keep me happy to a degree.

I don't know how long you have been watching, but I've been watching since S2 aired for the first time. I've lived my life since then with these people and when one leaves, especially one I really love, it's like a good friend is leaving me. That is going to take some doing to get over.

I started watching last March and went through the entire series in about 3 months. But I understand about growing attached to characters and hating when they leave--says the girl who just bawled her way through "Not Fade Away." I don't have the same emotional attachment to SG-1 as I have to Buffy and Angel, but I can sublimate and understand.

I'm still going to watch the show, most like, because I watch for Michael Shanks, and if I could give season six a shot, I'll certainly be trying nine, even though I agree the show needs to end. It just won't be "SG-1" without Jack, just like I couldn't see an "SG-1" without out Daniel, and so I'm going to pretend season nine is another spin off, like Atlantis. "SG-Farscape" and I'm going to watch because of Michael Shanks, and Ben Browder, and Claudia Black…but it's… :: sob :: not going to be "SG-1" for me anymore.

You know, this is really strange for me, mostly since I’ve had seven or so seasons compressed into… wait… how many months? I can’t remember, but you probably know… three or four months, or thereabouts. Anyway.

I can see how you’d have a problem with them phasing Jack out. I have a problem with them phasing Jack out. But… even if Jack is no longer a part of the show, I’ll continue watching. Because I love this universe. I mean, after all, although I was seriously peeved when Daniel went all glowy-squid on us for a year, I grew to love Jonas. And the eps were just as good. Writing, directing, none of that changed when Michael Shanks was no longer a regular.

I haven’t noticed a decline in the acting or the directing or the super-nifty-cool visuals of the show so far. In fact, two of the episodes I’ve actually seen of season eight [remember, I’ve seen maybe… two? three?... of the ones that aired before the mid-season break] were totally mindblowingly awesome and will bear repeat viewings [“Citizen Joe” and “Prometheus Unbound,” I’m looking at you!] and possibly will be added to my short list of Best Stargate Eps Ever. And I have strict criteria. I’m rather picky.

Many of my favorite shows had long since jumped the shark by their last season. [Well, DS9 stayed good, but TNG, ENT, various WB shows, Early Edition, so on and so forth—they definitely jumped the shark big time.] SG-1 so far has shown no ominous signs of shark-jumpage. And we still have at least Season 9 to go.

So I shall cross my fingers and hope for the best, SG-1-wise. And if it does all go horribly wrong [knock-on-wood it won’t] I will always have Atlantis to fall back on.
