‘Stargate’ Opens Floodgates

Excerpt --
“There's obviously a passionate audience for Atlantis and the characters of Atlantis,” Howe said. “And yes, they're absolutely going to continue in the movie franchise. But people need to mourn for a while and come to terms with it. I don't anticipate that that will subside quickly. But once Universe is on air and they have kind of their next fix of the Stargate franchise, I think hopefully people will realize that it's in safe hands at Sci Fi, that we really value this franchise and it's in our interest and the fans' interest to let us continue the story and figure out how to retell it for a new audience every few years.”

YOU DO NOT GET TO DECIDE WHAT WE LIKE, MR. HOWE. Most of us have been doing that for a very long time, thank you. It is comments like this that will have the fans boycotting your shiny, new show, asshats.

But the show sounds like crap. And going for a younger audience that is outside the SG-1's and SGA's main fanbases is suicide right there.

I particularly like how Mr. Howe assumes that one show is completely interchangeable for another. So what if we're missing the characters and situations and gorgeous sets of Stargate: Atlantis? Once I get my "Stargate fix," provided to me by the bubble-gum-shallow new show, obviously I will have no need for the older show.

It's like Mr. Howe is saying, "So, um, I'm totally going to be taking away your really nice Stargate Merlot. But don't worry! You'll be able to get your alcohol fix from this lovely new Stargate Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill citrus wine!"

But, Mr. Howe, I'm drinking my Stargate Merlot because I enjoy its full-bodied flavor and the rich (and often fruity) character interactions. I would only drink Stargate Strawberry Hill if I want to get trashed as fast as possible and don't care what I'm drinking, just so long as it's cheap and easy. And that, honestly, is not what I'm looking for in my alcohol. Or my television. ASSHAT.

Also irritating:

Joseph Mallozzi, one of two show runners on Atlantis, noted in his blog last Friday that rising production costs and a steep climb in the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar were among the factors that stacked the odds against a renewal.

***

Howe said the plan is to produce Universe in Vancouver — “the good news is the greenback is bouncing back” — and said it would have high production values, which he said the fans expect.

UM. IS IT JUST ME OR DO THOSE TWO STATEMENTS SEEM TO CONTRADICT EACH OTHER? "I'm sorry, it's too expensive to have special effects and film in Canada, so we're cancelling Atlantis." "Oh, hi, it's us again, the new series is going to have special effects and film in Canada! Isn't that exciting?!"

WHAT. SCIFI IS ON CRACK. EXPLAIN THEIR LOGIC TO ME, SARAH, BECAUSE MY BRAIN CAN'T MAKE SENSE OF IT.

Also also.

When the network canceled Stargate SG-1, fans reacted sharply, but Sci Fi had already put the spinoff Atlantis on the schedule.

Um. Not so much. SGA began in 2004. SG1 was cancelled in 2007. We had a couple of years to get used to the new show before they ganked the old one. Which gave the network a safety net: if Atlantis tanked, they still had SG1 to make them the money. What backup plan do they have in place if (when) Stargate: Universe tanks?

OH RIGHT MAKE MORE CHEAP AND CRAPPY MONSTER MOVIES

They're scrambling like headless chickens in an attempt to rescue the fanbase. How cool would it be if the entire SG fanbase boycotts the pilot of the new show? In your face, SciFi!

I have to admit I was not very impressed with the pilot of Atlantis and the show kinda grew on me over the years. It would be so boring not having anything to look forward to on TV anymore.
